10 Tips for Choosing a Laptop

Buying a laptop can be a very frustrating and confusing experience for people who are used to a desktop computer. Here are some of the things you need to consider when selecting a laptop for business or home use.

  1. Screen size

This is a very vital factor to remember when purchasing a laptop. Though most laptops have a standard size of 15”, you can find some models with 19” and 20” screen sizes. In addition, there are also some laptops which come with wide-screen monitors. This is ideal for people who also watch movies on their laptops.

  1. Processor

The central processing unit (CPU) is the most vital component of a laptop or a PC. With the many options available, it is not easy to make a choice. Depending on your needs, select the processor that best suits you in terms of performance as well as price.

  1. Memory

The more memory you have, the better for you. The efficiency and speed with which your work gets done will depend on how much memory you have. Nowadays, most laptops come pre-loaded with a RAM 1GB. However, make sure the memory can be upgraded when necessary. In addition, find out how much memory the laptop can support so as to avoid any surprises when upgrading the memory.

  1. Storage

It is important to select a large hard disk which can store all your folders and files. Preferably, go for a disk space of at least 100GB. Depending on your needs, you could also choose hard disk drives of up to 400GB. When selecting the storage size, you need to keep in mind the hard disk speed. Generally, laptops with a higher speed perform much better.

  1. Sturdiness

Carry the laptop in your hands to find out how comfortably it can be carried around. Make sure it is not too heavy, and that it is solid and sturdy. Remember to also try out the keyboard.

  1. Pointing device

Besides checking how sturdy and solid the laptop is, you should also look at the pointing device which the laptop uses. Find out if it is working well and in the way it is supposed to. In addition, make sure the gliding pad and the trackball are in the best condition. Though you can operate your laptop using an external mouse, it is easier to use the built-in device when mobile.

  1. Expansion slots

The number of expansion options is another crucial consideration when selecting a laptop. Go for laptops which have at least one Firewire port and at least four USB2 connections. Firewire and USB are very important for connecting external devices such as cell phones, MP3 players or digital cameras to the laptop.

  1. Wireless connectivity

Over the past few years, wireless networks have become increasingly popular with web users. You should therefore look for a laptop which has in-built Wi-Fi features. This will enable you to connect to the internet when you are in an area which is Wi-Fi enabled. You should also find out if the laptop is Bluetooth enabled.

  1. Optical drives

Optical drives such as a DVD-writer, Bluray writer/player or a DVD-player are vital for anyone who wants save data on a disc (BluRay or DVD). Important photos, music files and documents can be kept safe and secure in the optical devices which are easy to use and have a high storage capacity.

  1. Battery life

Before purchasing a laptop, find out how long the battery lasts. Make sure you find a laptop which will give you a reasonable battery life. This is especially important for those people who are constantly on the move.

Sony will be more expensive than the other 2, but personally I’d say any of those 3 laptop brands will be a pretty safe bet. You might be able to customise your laptop a bit more if choose a Dell, and Lenovo are aimed more at business people. But regardless, they are 3 good manufacturers

  9. Great Tips and advice – I personally think that if you know what you need in a laptop – Hardware and software alike, You should do a bit of research on new and upcoming models not released yet but soon to be released. This can save you some trouble by rather waiting a bit and getting the laptop that you want rather than buying one now and regretting it later on.

  37. Good advice – unfortunately the advice I took from an ‘expert’ who sourced my laptop provided me with a high specification laptop however, whilst I have oodles of extra memory etc… the guy who sourced my laptop on my behalf specified a 32 bit OS, which I am now told is what is preventing my slow computer accessing all the available memory on the laptop – solution is to wipe it and install a 64 bit OS, which also means days of reinstalling programs and personal settings on my laptop – POO.
