I think we can agree that 2011 was a hectic year for pretty much everyone. The web also continued to grow at an enormous rate, we all know that, but how about some figures to put that into perspective.
Well Web Traffic Monitoring Company Pingdom made it their business to track what we all got up to last year. They recently released a report on what we all got up to last year, and I think you’ll agree that there’s some pretty crazy figures in there.

Have a look at some of these:

  • 3.146 Billion email accounts worldwide
  • 112 emails sent and received everyday by the average corporate user
  • 71% of email traffic was spam
  • 40 years since the first email was sent
  • 800+ million Facebook users
  • 200 million new Facebook users in 2011
  • 350 million Facebook users who log in with Mobile Phones
  • 100 billion estimated number of pictures on Facebook
  • 225 million Twitter accounts
  • 18.1 million people followed Lady Gaga (most popular user)
  • 250 million average number of tweets a day
  • 70 million WordPress Blogs
  • 2.4 billion Social networking accounts worldwide
  • 1 trillion number of video playbacks on YouTube
  • 140 number of playbacks per person
  • 48 hours worth of video uploaded every minute
  • 4,189,214 new users on Vimeo
  • 201.4 billion videos watched online every month
  • 4.5 million pictures uploaded to Flickr everyday
  • 6 billion photos on Flickr
  • 555 million websites
  • 300 million new websites in 2011
  • 95.5 million .com domain names
  • 13.8 million .net domain names
  • 9.3 million .org domain names
  • 220 million registered domain names
  • $2.6 million the price of the most expensive domain name sold in 2011 (social.com)
  • 2.1 Billion internet uses worldwide
  • 45% of internet users are under the age of 25
  • 591 million fixed broadband subscriptions worldwide
  • 5.9 billion estimated mobile phone subscriptions worldwide

Now they are some pretty mind boggling figures! It’s hard to even imagine how Pingdom even managed to track all of this data. One things for sure though, these figures will continue to increase and grow next year as well.

What figure surprised/amazed you the most?
