Massive Games I Have Been Disappointed With

There are many games that are released during the course of the year that have seriously flopped in my personal opinion. Although these games have gone on to become a great success in that they have made a lot of money and pleased a lot of gamers, I will say that the following games have seriously disappointed me and I will of course give my reasons.

Modern Warfare 2

This game was mentioned in many stores across the world as the “game of the decade” but for me it was nothing more than a cheaply made sequel with no real depth being added to it since the original. This seems to be the way that the Call of Duty series is heading at the moment as I have not really seen something I have genuinely been impressed with in a good number of years. Do not think I am a COD hater because I have purchased them all and waited outside for the midnight release Modern Warfare 2. I have to say I was impressed with the campaign but it only took me a few hours to complete, and despite the few problems I had with veteran difficulty, it isn’t a very hard game to master.

In terms of online play I was very disappointed indeed and it seems all they did was rehash what they had done in the first game and added a couple of new features. On top of this, every game I played consisted of at least two 12 year olds moaning in their very annoying high pitched squeaks. I am almost certain this game was released with either an M (USA) or here in the UK as an 18. What are these parents doing allowing kids to annoy the Xbox Live and PS community?

On a final note I cannot see the new COD being any more than a Modern Warfare 2.5 in which you can fly a helicopter, my personal opinion is that they should put a stop to the franchise after concluding Modern Warfare with the inevitable number 3.

Halo:ODST

I’m a massive Halo fan, but I thought if I don’t put something about this all of the Call Of Duty lovers are going to kill me so here it is.

I have to say I was really looking forward to ODST and as a Halo fan since the original was released on the Xbox it was a game to bridge the gap between Halo 3 and the next game for me. Bungie made a very disappointing and terrible game indeed. The story was one of the worst I have ever played through and I felt that hunting for objects for 20 minutes plus at a time without doing much at all was a very dull experience and one I never wish to have to play through again. No one cares about the Rookie’s story and it told us nothing that we didn’t already know. The health system was a pain in the ass and I was sick and tired of fighting Brutes instead of Elites by the end of Halo 3 let alone this game!

The multiplayer in this game consisted solely of Firefight which was good but not good enough thanks to the fact we had to play as an ODST and not a Spartan, something that has thankfully been fixed in Reach’s version: Firefight 2.0!

All in all the game was very dull and one I unfortunately regretted buying even with my love for Halo being up there with classics like Super Mario World.

In all honesty this proves that even the biggest developers need to watch what they are doing when it comes to making the games they do. I have seen and played (thanks to the Beta) significant improvements in the new Halo game (also looks to have a great storyline) I am still unconvinced Call of Duty has anything left to offer the gaming community. I will buy it none the less with the hope that they have done something.

I know many of you out there are going to argue some of the points I make so please do and I will argue back in the comments section!

While I did love both of these games, I did consider them as disappointments considering the rich heritage they are imbued with. Modern Warefare 2 was a visual master-class, totally visceral and involving, but as you said, it offers nothing new to the series. It makes you wonder how long Activison/Treyarch can continue churning out sequels that have no new gameplay elements, rather relying on different storylines/themes to carry to franchise.

I can’t possibly say a bad word against Halo, I see it as the benchmark for all 1st person shooters, game-play and physics-wise the guys at Bungie have everything spot on. While I liked the non-linear narrative structure, I must agree that the game seemed a little dull at times, perhaps not helped by the sparse repetitive environments. In any case ODST added some excellent maps to the already brilliant Halo 3 online experience and I’d say it was worth buying for the Reach beta alone!

It’s great to see that there is some innovation and progression in place in the next Halo installment which I personally cannot wait to play. I’m not so enthusiastic about COD: Black Ops, can’t see it being mind-blowing, saying that I’ll still buy it. I see these Franchises a bit like the FIFA football series, keep giving people a what they love with slight tweaks each year and they will lap it up. In short, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Great post mate, I completely agree with Modern Warfare 2, I thought the game was terrible not sure about the other one as I haven’t really played it to be honest.

    Ryan,

Well written post, and you obviously know your stuff about these games. I have to admit that i too was greatly dissapointed with MW2 and i have never really played Halo – PS3 lover :).

Anyways, I do disagree with you about Black Ops. Have you even seen the Trailer for it? I would hardly say that it was the same. Machinima actually did a review of the trailer looking at what was new in it, and there was a phenomenal amount:

    First
The ballistic knife – super sweet!
    Crossbow
    Napalm Strikes
The scenarios – WOW, a rocket taking off in background.
    The remote controlled car bomb!
    Wired Missiles
    Surveillance cameras
    Double knives – sweet.
New Iron Sights and even customizable target sights.
    And thats just the Trailer.

    Second.
It looks as though there are new movement features, at one point in the trailer it appears as though someone can run and jump into a prone position (pretty sweet).
Interesting new ways of dying, check out the missile to the face! lol.

    Mark,

whilst some of the features on this do look pretty cool it seems to me that they have nicked a lot of their ideas from the Halo franchise i.e. the diving roll as well as the replay section at the end of the game with save slots.

The graphics do not look any different to previous games and the gameplay looks exactly the same. Whilst things like the RC car and the napalm bomb will be cool for a couple of rounds it was safe to say that the Harrier Jet in MW2 was the same and that got very old very quickly.

All I can see here is nicked ideas from other games and the same multiplayer gameplay as ever when it comes to COD games.

Saying this I will be buying the game and will hold some hope that the game is half decent until I have played through it properly, I agree with you in that they are good games but this one needs change or I am leaving the franchise!
