Recently you may have noticed that there have been a lot of digital cameras being advertised, in particular the Panasonic Lumix G series, that claim to have the photo quality of a digital SLR camera combined with the compact nature of… well a compact camera. Whilst many people are referring to these cameras as compact digital SLRs they are in fact micro system cameras also known as hybrid cameras.

This new breed of cameras has the same interchangeable lens functionality that you would find on a full sized digital SLR camera. The only reason why these cameras cannot be referred to as digital SLRs is because they do not have the classic view finder that a larger digital SLR has. Instead the micro system cameras use an LCD screen on the back of the camera.

Panasonic were first to his market with the Lumix G1 which became available towards the end of 2008. This camera has now been replaced by the Lumix G2 that has video capabilities which the G1 does not. Using a rotatable LCD screen this camera really set the trend for hybrid cameras and is still available today.

Olympus and Panasonic came together to create the micro four thirds format in order to create a camera that was smaller than a digital SLR but had the same benefits. However Samsung with their NX-10 camera are also starting to get attention in this market place. Using different technology to that of Panasonic and Olympus one of the major advances has been the use of a AMOLED screen meaning that the screen does not require a backlight. This is great power saving feature and also means that you can hold the camera right up to your eye when using the EVF (electronic view finder).

The Olympus E-P2 can record HD movies at a 720p resolution. Some features that photography enthusiasts will like about this camera are in-built image stabilisation and some art filters to make your photos stand out even more.
