Android first appeared in 2008, but only really started to make an impact on the smartphone market in the last year or so. Not only does it match pretty much match everything the iPhone OS can do, but in most areas it beats it as well. Here’s a list of 5 ways that Android kicks the iPhone and its OS.
1. Proper Multitasking
Now before you all jump at me and say that iOS 4 brought in Multitasking (finally) to the iPhone, I know this. However it’s not true multitasking, Apple as usual have a say in everything that gets to actually run in the background. This is very limited to things like radio and GPS. The rest of the Apps are just paused and resume when you return back to them. With Android it’s a different story all together. Ever since version 1.0, Android has been able to run multiple apps at the same time. It doesn’t just pause apps and resume them, it allows them all to run in the background at the same time.
2. Widgets
One of my favorite things about Android is the home screens with widgets. You can actually see real time information on them that actively changes, and even contribute to them like turning on and off wi-fi, changing songs or sending out a tweet, all without ever opening up an app. It’s just really handy and convenient and really sets Android aside from iOS 4.
3. Better App Market
Ok this one is somewhat debatable, the Apple App Store has the biggest variety of apps, with several hundred thousand apps, while the Android Market has just about reached 100,000 apps. The Apple app store overlooks many apps because many already exist or are similar. Apple are also known for censoring all apps, for any small little thing that’s against Apple’s liking. Android on the other hand is open to everyone and anyone so the possibilities are endless.
4. You Can Choose Your Own Hardware
It’s Ironic really, Apple encourage their users to think different, yet when it comes to the hardware, what choice do you have? Really all you can choose from is different colors and memory capacity. With Android devices however, there’s so much choice. HTC, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, LG, and Samsung as well as many others all offer their own flavour of Android devices with a variety of specs. And some of these phones mean business, these superphones all boast large sharp displays, slick designs and monster processors, making many of them higher spec than the iPhone 4.
5. You Pick Your Carrier
Really the biggest problem with the iPhone is the fact it’s so limited with its carriers. In the US this problem is worse than in other countries. I don’t think I need to comment on what people have experienced with AT&T in the US, and how much people are longing for a different carrier for the iPhone. In Europe it’s not as big of a problem as there are several carriers carrying the iPhone. But you can get yourself an Android device on just about any network you want, they’re much more widely available, in fact many of them are easily available sim-free which opens up even more possibilities.
So there you go, 5 reason why I think Android is better than the iPhone and iOS 4.
Do you agree with me on this? Has anyone any more reasons they’d like to add, or reasons why the iPhone is better than Android (could be a new post on that)

Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
