How often have you been annoyed at your browser crashing or coming across flaws and bugs and thinking, if only I could get paid for this. Well recently Firefox announced that they were rewarding up to $3000 for any serious bugs found in its browser. Now hot on their heals, Google has announced that they are rewarding up to $3113.7 for major bugs found in its chromium browser.
Why $3113.7? It’s a typical little nerdy play from Google on the word “elite” typical………
This is a good move from Google as companies like Microsoft and Adobe have confirmed in the past that they will not be paying developers for any bugs that they find in their software. However now Google,Apple and Mozilla along with others are offering payment for bugs found.
And if you look at the bigger picture, this is another good move. Up until now, “security researchers” (in other words: hackers) had a tough dilemma: Do I take this security hole to Microsoft (or Google, or Mozilla, or Apple) and quietly wait until they fix it while getting little to no pay and recognition? Or do I go find someone on the black market who is more than willing to buy it off me and give me $40,000 who will then use it to publish a zero day exploit and take over the world?
Hopefully monetary rewards from companies will prevent things like this from happening, and make the web a safer place for all of us.
