It’s all great having some killer content, but it’s no good if your site is a mess and cluttered making it nearly impossible for people to find and read your content. That’s the last thing you want, you can’t afford to have your readers leave your site just because it’s poorly designed, there is no excuse for that.

So here are 5 ways to make your site more user friendly:

  1. No Scrollbars!
  2. Focus On Content
  3. Make It Easy To Subscribe and Follow
  4. Don’t Use Pop-Ups!
  5. Make It Easy To Read

1. No Scrollbars!

There is nothing more annoying than going onto a site and having to scroll horizontally on it. It’s just dam frustrating, and a sign of lazy site design. What ever you do make sure you don’t have horizontal scrolling on your site. Vertical scrolling is fine, but try and keep your most important content above the fold, ie.the part of the page you see before you scroll.

2. Focus On Content

Your content is the heart of your site. Don’t sacrifice the placement of your content for adverts. Make the content the focus of your site so it’s pretty much the first thing you see when you land on your page. Headlines are critical, they should stand out and make it clear that you can click on them for the rest of the article.

3. Make It Easy To Subscribe and Follow

You want as many subscribers and followers as possible so make sure you make it easy for them to follow you. Have links to your twitter, facebook, myspace sites etc…. as well as options to sign up to your rss feed and newsletter. The more subscribers and followers you have the better

4.Don’t Use Pop-Ups!

Nobody likes pop-ups, and all browsers these days come with pop-up blockers so please don’t try and use them. It shows the user your thinking about your needs and not theirs and they wont be too impressed. I close pop-ups straight away without reading them and generally just leave the site. So it’s not a tactic worth trying.

5. Make It Easy To Read

It shouldn’t be hard work for your readers to read your latest post. Make sure your fonts are clean and clear, not too small and not too big. Don’t have a crazy color scheme with your font because it’s just too taxing on the eye. One of the worst is white font on a black background, it’s just not practical. Also don’t let ads distract your users from reading your content, don’t go placing them in the middle of a paragraph.

So there’s 5 quick tips to make your site more user friendly and hopefully encourage more of your readers to keep coming back.

Came in via famousbloggers, and couldn't agree more with your second and last points. Unfortunately, a considerable number of bloggers don't have content that's really worth giving a second glance at, let alone a first.

This post is bookmarked; will share with newbie bloggers appropriately.
