Ever since the iPad was released, the whole world seems to have gone mad for tablets, however the only one that is actually selling is the iPad. Some of you may remember my post giving out about how much people were drooling over the iPad coming up to it’s release, but thankfully the obsession has subsided……a bit.
When Steve Jobs announced the iPad, he wanted to create a new gap in the market. He was trying to squeeze in their between netbooks and laptops, or was it between smartphones and laptops?
Whichever one it was, he’s managed to get in there, and in doing so has opened up a whole new market for tablet PC’s, with every manufacturer rushing to announce a tablet in the works. The only problem is, none of these have been brought to market, why is this?
Coming up to the release of the iPad, every person in the tech world (who wasn’t an Apple Fanboy/Fangirl) was against it and said they would never buy one in a million years and it’s going to fail miserably. Well it seems the consumer had a different opinion and went hell for leather to try and get their hands on one.
But do we really need tablets? Or is it just something that we want? Yes I’ll admit they can be convenient and handy but there is no outstanding features that make them any better than a netbook or laptop. The form factor may be to some people’s liking, but would you buy a device that will only let you do less?
Think about it, now I’m probably comparing more the iPad to a Netbook because there’s no other tablets to compare but the same theories apply.
What can you do on an iPad that you can’t on a Netbook? Nothing, what can you do on a netbook that you can’t on a tablet/iPad? Quite a lot – physical keyboard, HDMI Ports, USB Ports, run a full OS, more portable, more power, more features, etc….
Have a look at this image below
I personally don’t need or want a tablet PC. I’ve got my HTC Desire for browsing the web on the go, and my laptop for every other occasion, and that’s plenty for me.
I think tablets are aimed more at the less techy people, because they’re easier to use, simpler and more to the point.
What do you think? Do we need tablets? Or are they just something that we want?

I found your entry interesting do I’ve added a Trackback to it on my weblog :)…
I recently bought a tablet. It wasn’t an iPad or anything, but it had the whole touchscreen deal. I wish I’d kept the money. I think it would only really be useful if I had gotten it through a wireless company and didn’t have to find a free wi-fi network anytime I wanted to use it. But if I have to pay for an internet signal, it hardly seems worth the price. I might as well just get a card and use it with an actual computer or netbook. Really bad decision. :(
