Now there’s no doubt that HTC make some great phones, there’s the HTC Incredible, EVO 4G and in fact I own a HTC Desire which I love to bits. It’s by far the best smartphone I’ve ever had. And what do pretty much all the great HTC smartphones have in common? They run Android.
HTC are churning out new phones faster than Google can make new versions of Android and it’s working well for them. We were impressed in April when HTC forecast a record $1.6 billion revenue for itself over the second quarter. To say the least it was very optimistic. And now what have they gone and done? They’ve blown that figure out of the water and made $1.88 billion income over the period between April and June. Which is a solid increase of 33% in profits compared to last year.
HTC are certainly the ones to watch out for, they are rapidly catching up with Apple and are becoming a major player in the smartphone industry. And why wouldn’t they, they make great phones, in fact the’re super phones. They make some the highest spec phones on the market, all with dazzling displays, monster CPU’s and mostly running the latest iteration of Android with the Sense UI. What more could you want?
HTC are without doubt, one of the main reasons why Android is taking off as one of the most popular operating systems, and it’s the only real threat Apple should be concerned about. It’s the only one with a decent App Store (apart from Apple) and it’s been continually updated with new better features.
In the past smartphone manufacturers were playing catch up with Apple, now the tables have turned and Apple are struggling to keep up with the rate of change.
I’m telling you, watch out for HTC and Android, they’re on the charge big time. HTC are expected to ship an incredible 24 million phones this year and are expecting to ship 60 to 70% more phones in the second half of 2010 than they have in the first half.
HTC alongside Android are here playing with the big boys, and they’re winning.
