iPhone 4 Review: So what’s new?

The iPhone 4 is finally here. After being dogged by rumours, lost prototypes and police raids the latest Apple smartphone has hit the shops and is proving so popular, that some mobile carriers have had to restrict their sales.

So, of course the main question is – what’s new? What makes the iPhone 4 any better than the 3GS? Well here are the main improvements for the new Apple iPhone 4.

Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the iPhone 4 is the brand new sleek design, which is a lot more compact than its predecessors. The front and back of the phone are made with black glass, with a band of reinforced stainless steel sandwiched between them. Of course, it’s not your average tumbler glass that they’ve made it with but it’s been treated to make it extremely strong. The handset is much slimmer than the 3GS with dimensions of 115.2mm x58.6 mm x 9.3mm and a noticeable lack of a curved back.

Software

iPhone 4 runs on the iOS4 which has some new features which users will be pleased with, especially since they lamented the lack of some of them in previous models. The iPhone 4 is also amazingly speedy, no more lag and you can keep as many apps running as you want. Genius.

  • Multi-tasking – Yes, you can now multi-task on your iPhone, double tap your home button to bring up a little dock of apps, select the one you want and do what you need to before double-tapping again to go back to what you were doing.
  • Face Time – so you can video call your friends
  • Spell Checker – Replacing the auto-correct function is the spell checker which does exactly what it says on the tin.
  • App Folders – You can now organise your apps into folders (of a sort) so you don’t have to scroll around your home screen to find the one you want.
  • One Inbox – You can now look at all your email accounts in one place, rather than flicking between them all. Any instant messages are also threaded too.
  • Customisable Background – Better late than never.

Retina Display

The iPhone 4 screen is far superior to that of the 3GS and has 4x the number of pixels, so everything is super sharp and clear. The 960×640 display is called Retina Display on account of the fact that it features more pixels than the eye can actually observe.

Camera

The camera is definitely better than the 3GS, although it’s not the best phone camera on the market. It has 5 megapixels and a backlit sensor but you won’t find any fancy applications here, it’s simply, photos, video, flash and zoom.  You can however, shoot videos in HD and you can also edit them afterwards, but unfortunately you cannot upload movies directly from the iPhone, you’ll have to put it on your PC/Laptop first.

Gaming

Games on the iPhone are nothing new but the iPhone 4 features the rather cool gyroscope – which works much like the Wii controller in that it can figure out which way you are facing – bringing plenty of potential for gaming on the iPhone 4. There’s only one game co far (Gun Range) but so far it looks more promising than any other gaming experience on a phone.
