Should HP Be Getting Into The Smartphone Market?

I’m sure you all remember the deal that HP struck with Palm, which saw them buying out the smartphone manufacturer which was rapidly losing money, for the nice sum of $1.2 Billion. Now traditionally HP has always been to me, and the rest of the world, a pc manufacturer. Making some of the best laptops, netbooks and desktop computers. However now they want to get into the smartphone market as well. Should they?

Honestly I don’t think they should. Don’t get me wrong, HP do make great products, but when I think of HP, mobile phones don’t jump to the forefront of my mind. It’s like thinking of Microsoft when you go to buy a Jet Ski or something, it just doesn’t seem to make sense to me.

Now I know that smartphones are becoming more and more like micro computers these days. My very own smartphone, the HTC Desire in fact has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor  which is faster and has more RAM than my first computer I had 10 years ago or so.

But I honestly think that HP would be better off sticking to the mobile computing market, and not getting involved in a highly competitive market, full of companies which have already made great progress and are quickly squashing any competition.

Apple, Nokia, HTC, Motorola and RIM are dominanting these markets at the moment and are not letting anyone in on there territory. Now I know that HP have there brand behind them, and a massive budget, but there brand has been established in the computing and laptop sector, not the smartphone one.

Where I would like to see HP really developing products is for the tablet market. Some of you may know that I’m not the biggest fan of the iPad, you can read that here. Despite everything we thought, Apple have managed to go and create a new tablet market all on there own. For the moment Apple are the only major player here, so there’s room for more, the smartphone market on the otherhand is already overcrowded.

I’d love to see HP really take a stab at a good decent tablet device, don’t do a half job on it please HP! Sit down and see what Apple is doing right, and don’t do what they’re doing wrong. The HP Slate is a start, but I think they could do better.

And I know you’ve gone and bought Palm to get in on the mobile market, but I think this OS could work great if it was adapted for a tablet device.

So go on HP, make a tablet, not a smartphone.

What do you guys think, should HP enter the smartphone market?
