Now that Google maps have gone 3D you obviously want to cruise down your street (on Google maps) and see everything in wonderful 3D vision. I know that’s what I wanted to do when I found out about this feature but I didn’t have any 3D glasses. If this is the first time you’ve heard about Google maps in 3D then there’s a good chance this is the problem you are having as well.

However 3D glasses are not that easy to get hold of unless you have been to a 3d movie but who wants to go and sit through a movie just to get some sweet glasses. So what I did and what I will describe to you is how I made my own 3D glasses right at home and avoided the trouble of having to hunt down some 3D glasses myself.

1.    If you already wear prescription glasses then you already a step ahead because the first thing you will want to do is get yourself some frames. Maybe you have some old plastic glasses lying around that you can use or simply print out the Google glasses picture (above) onto card and follow the instructions. Failing that cut a long thin rectangle of card bend it into three pieces and cut slots to go over your ears and eye holes of course.

2.    Get some clear plastic, like the plastic fizzy drink bottles are made from and cut two pieces that are large enough to cover your eyes. Using felt tip pens carefully colour in one red and one blue making sure to get and even coating on each lens.

3.    This is important so make sure you get these the right way around. Tape the red piece of plastic over your left eye and the blue goes over your right. The flatter the plastic the better this will work so try and tape them down well.

There you go a 3 minute fix for your 3D problems. Enjoy the splendour of Google maps in 3D!

PS. Google introduced the 3D mode to Google maps on April the 1st which made many people think this was an elaborate April fool’s joke. However we are still seeing instances where you can see Google maps in 3D so for now it looks like Google is set on taking its 3D maps to the masses. There was of course 3D books by Google which has turned out to be an April fool’s joke but don’t get mistaken Google maps in 3D is still around and I strongly urge you to check it out. You can see Google Maps in 3D mode when in street view by right clicking and selecting “3D mode on” from the context menu.
