It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here, Apple have now made Movie downloads available on the iTunes store for Ireland and France. This means Movies from major film studios like 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Walt Disney, Warner and Universal are finally available to these iTunes users for download.
In addition, each country will get access to films from European studios. In Ireland, E1 Entertainment, Lionsgate UK, and Optimum Releasing will be available, while French customers will receive access to the Pathé, SND, and StudioCanal catalogue.
After negotiating the myriad of rights issues that need to be resolved to launch movies in Europe, Apple’s iTunes movie content is finally available and movies like Avatar, Twilight and Iron Man are available to download right now!
Pricing for both countries is the same iTunes movies start at €7.99 for catalogue title purchases, €9.99 for recent releases and €13.99 for new releases. iTunes Movie Rentals are €2.99 for library title rentals and €3.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are priced at one euro more.
Once a movie is rented, it starts downloading from the iTunes Store directly to iTunes or Apple TV, and users with a fast Internet connection can start viewing the movie in seconds. Customers have up to 30 days to start watching it, and once a movie has been started customers have 48 hours to finish it-or watch it multiple times.
Movies are available for purchase on iTunes the same day as their release and can be viewed on an iPhone, iPod with video, Mac or PC, or on a widescreen TV with Apple TV.
It’s also worth noting that users of the France and Ireland store have 30 days to start watching rentals, and 48 hours to finish (instead of the 24-hour window in the U.S.)
So there we go, it’s about time that Movie rentals and downloads have found their way to the iTunes store in Ireland! This will certainly put pressure on the high street stores for rentals, but DVD sales may not be affected as much as you can buy the physical DVD for only an extra euro or so
