I’m sure you’ve all seen one of them at some stage, the Hitler Parody videos which have a scene from the movie Downfall. In this scene, we see Hitler flipping out, and it has been the basis for hundreds of parody videos ever since. The videos all retain the original audio track, but feature subtitles that tell a tale that revolves around any number of subjects.
This series of parodies has been going on for some time now without any problem, but on April 21st, that all came to a crashing end as Constantin Film Production, the company behind the film, started using YouTube’s Content ID system to remove unauthorized clips of the film from the site.
The thing is, these clips clearly fall under the Fair Use clause of copyright law as they are parodies, and parody is a protected form of speech that is covered by the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. If you watch the video below you will see they’ve even gone and made a video in true Hitler Parody expressing their, discontent…….
What exactly is the company is hoping to accomplish by taking down these videos? Because to be brutally honest, how many other Downfall clips have you seen out there?
But then when you think about it, this has obviously brought the film to the attention of far more people than just about anything else out there. So more than likely the case here is the Film producers are causing a bit of a stir in order to gain some much needed publicity, and somehow I think they’ve got it.
So it will be interesting to see if these Videos last much longer on YouTube
