We have heard all about big multinational corporations being in the firing line when it’s been discovered that they’re using child labour. I think we all remember the big taboo over Nike when they were using child labour.
Well Apple seems to be the latest company to fall victim to this, however to be fair to them, they didn’t seem to be aware of it. An internal company audit showed that more than half (54 percent) of all factories are failing to meet Apple’s already inflated maximum 60-hour work week, 24 percent paying less than the minimum wage, 37 percent failing to respect anti-discrimination rules, and three facilities holding records of employing a total of eleven 15-year olds (who were over the legal age of 16 or had left by the time of the audit).
Of course Apple were not to impressed with this, so credit is due to them for telling its 102 manufactures that if they don’t comply with company standards, their contracts will be pulled.
According to these manufacturers, only Apple seem to be making such rigorous investigations into things like this. Also the Daily Telegraph has also had a field day at Apple and are trying to make this seem worse than it is.
I don’t think Apple are at fault here, it’s more than manufacturers fault for not enforcing Apple’s contracts. It’s good to see that Apple are taking this seriously, but then again they can’t afford to damage their image
