Remember that contest that iTunes were running to reach 100 Billion downloads? The contest winner received a $10,000 voucher for the iTunes store. The #10,000,000,000 song was by none of than Johnny Cash, with his “Guess Things Happen That Way”. The lucky winner was Louie Sulcer, a resident of Woodstock, Georgia bought the song and was awarded with the $10,000 Itunes gift card.
Well it seems that he got more than he bargained for,
It’s not everyday that you pick up your phone to find Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple on the other end, I’m sure when Louie Sulcer picked it up he must have been certain that it was a prank call.
Apparently, when Sulcer heard Jobs say, “This is Steve Jobs from Apple,” he replied, “Yeah right! Come on now, who is this?” But when he saw the caller ID, which was simply “Apple,” Sulcer he realized he was actually the winner of a $10,000 iTunes gift card.
In an interview with Rolling Stone he told them he had a son who loves playing tricks and thought he was the one making the Jobs call. Sulcer was making a mix of Cash songs for his son when he purchased the tune that marked a milestone for iTunes as a music retail store.
The details of how Sulcer bought the song are interesting. He first listened to the 30-second preview, as he said he had never listened to the song, before actually buying it. It’s hard to believe any Johnny Cash fan wouldn’t already know the song, but if Sulcer did and skipped the preview, the timing would have been off, and the song wouldn’t have netted him the big prize.
He recently got a present of an iPod nano but he may want to consider some new hardware if he is to use up that $10,000 gift card!
