At the Mobile World Congress event, Facebook announced a new feature. Facebook Zero, a stripped down, text only version of Facebook designed solely for mobile phones with low bandwidth. As Facebook becomes more and more popular and people feel the need to check their profiles and update their statuses every 5 minutes, Facebook are saying that more than 100 million people now access their Facebook accounts through their mobile phones.
Facebook Zero, a low-bandwidth site that omits “data intensive applications like photos”, is set to launch in the coming weeks. When you visit zero.facebook.com with your mobile browser you will receive a message saying that your carrier does not support the service. This is because it’s only new and Facebook are hoping to get carriers to sign up and provide the service free of charge to customers.
“We are discussing it, As an option to make Facebook on the mobile web available to everyone, anywhere and allow operators to encourage more mobile internet usage.”
Mobile users will be able to switch from the text only version of the site and view images etc… but when they do this they will then be charged by the carrier for the “Premium Service”
Facebook have said they are looking to role it out in the next few weeks and are hoping that carriers sign up to making it free for consumers.
“Zero” is a light-weight version of m.facebook.com that omits data intensive applications like Photos. It will launch in coming weeks and we are discussing it at MWC as an option to make Facebook on the mobile web available to everyone, anywhere and allow operators to encourage more mobile Internet usage.
