Despite all the hype around 3D TV’s at CES, we still have yet to see a 3D TV come to the market as of yet, and while some have been announced we aren’t expecting to see them on our shelves until the next couple of months and priced at around $4000.
A couple of months ago we discovered that the PS3 would support the official 3D Blu-ray standard without any hardware upgrades. Sony have now announced that it will be bringing 3D to PlayStation 3 via a firmware update. Sony’s American gaming boss, John Koller, told Pocket Lint that separate upgrades would enable stereoscopic gaming and 3D movies. PS3 owners are expected to be getting 3D powers down their broadband connections this summer
Koller said 3D game titles would be announced in due course.
Sony has also announced Stateside shipping of its first 3D-ready Blu-ray player – the BDP-S470 – which will need summer’s firmware upgrade to play 3D discs. The BDP-S570, launched previously, will also benefit from the firmware. Expect an announcement shortly about UK models.
The first dedicated 3D networks aren’t expected until 2011 but we are expected to see Premier League football in 3D in mid 2010.
