Google are looking to ride on the wave of social networking created by Facebook and Twitter. Google are looking to add some social networking featuers into Gmail. Today Google announced a new service called Buzz which is a social networking add-on to Gmail which borrows a few things from Twitter.
Appearing as a new option under your inbox link in your email, Buzz will automatically connect you with the contacts you email and IM, giving you the option to add more as you go. It is very like Facebook and Twitter in that it allows you to post status updates but your not limited to the number of characters that you can post. It also brings video and images to the mix. Google promises to ” go beyond status messages “.
Like Facebook, it pulls images and videos from sites to display them in the status updates and also works with Google reader and Twitter alike. On the privacy front, when you post a message you can share it with everyone or just a group of friends. When you receive a comment on something you post you will receive an email alerting you.
You can also reply directly to comments as well with the email or you can @ reply your friends so they are also alerted. ( Hmm, I wonder if Google were working with Twitter on this one? )Yo u’ll also get the occasional “Recommended” buzz , offering you a chance to widen your buzz circle to other people who post things you might like, again very like Facebook. This will often be based on something your friends have commented on for example, although you’ll be able to see why each one was recommended to you as and when they come in.
And of course where would we be without a phone app to let you keep buzzing on the go. What’s more you will be able to see what people in your area are talking about as each buzz will be paired with a geotag to pinpoint your location on Google Maps.
So it looks like ” Buzz ” will be the new ” Tweet ” or at least that’s what Google are hoping,
What do you think about this new feature?
Let me know in the comments
