What Is Google Goggles?
Yesterday Google released an update for the Nexus One which added multitouch and a new feature called Google Goggles. Not only is this a cool name, but it’s quite an interesting app, what it basically lets you do is surf the web using pictures.
This isn’t as far fetched as it sounds, in fact it’s quite genius. You can simply point you Android mobile phone at a painting, book, shop, monument or landmark and take a picture of it. Then you will automatically be shown results for it on the web, such as it’s history, reviews or where you can buy it. You can take a picture of a business contact card and it will automatically recognise the letters and numbers and give you the option to call or email straight away.
Your mobile phone uses a combination of GPS, a Compass and other location awareness features to show results. There’s no need to type anything into search anymore, just take a picture!
It’s a great new feature which is now being implemented onto Android Mobile Phones. It’s still in Google’s Labs which pretty much means it’s still in Beta but a pretty cool feature none the less.
Here’s to hoping we start seeing this on more mobile devices!
