It seems that HP are getting fed up with Apple being the main leader in the digital music front, so they’ve teamed up with British company Omniphone, a partner of EMI music, to offer its own digital music service. This will allow users of HP computers to download an unlimited amount of music to their PC’s for just €10 a month.
This really sounds like a bargain, and it is, the service differs from the likes of spotify in that you actually download the music, instead of just streaming the songs on demand. This shows us that they’re really trying to go after iTunes.
“As the world’s biggest PC vendor, HP has huge opportunity to create a viable competitor to iTunes due to its scale,” said Rob Lewis, chief executive of Omnifone,
This is somewhat similar to the Real Networks Rhapsody service in the US except that the HP MusicStation will only be available in 10 European countries. Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and Austria.
But where’s the catch? I here you say, well if you are looking to transfer the songs to your iPod or music player, I’m afraid your out of luck, you will only be able to transfer 10 of the DRM tracks per month.
“With its huge scale and user base, HP’s 10-country introduction … will help encourage legitimate access to digital music content,” Rob Wells, Universal Music’s digital music chief, said in a statement.
As of today, the HP MusicStation is up and running and users can download tracks from an extensive library of 6.5 million. However should Apple be afraid of this? I doubt it, how many other companies have tried and failed to enter the digital music club? Lots……..
