You may be sick of listening to your parents and grandparents telling you that video games are rotting your brain and that the whole of the human race is turning into zombies because of them. Well now you have a comeback of your very own, one which they can’t disagree with because it’s science!
Yes that’s right, real scientists are researchers have now proven at universities around the United States that gamers tend to have bigger brains and are able to concentrate better than others. It’s all very sciencey and I can tell you here and now that I have no knowledge of the brain and I can also tell you that I never will, but Kirk Erickson, Ann Graybiel, Arthur Kramer, and Walter Boot do.
They carried out a study on 39 individuals and asked them to play a game called Space Fortress , a video game developed at the University of Illinois that requires players to try to destroy a fortress without losing their own ship to one of several potential hazards.
The findings found that expert video gamers outperform novices on many basic measures of attention and perception as well as showing that gamers have larger brains in certain places.
As I mentioned earlier, I don’t know the in’s and out’s of it all, but you can see a more detailed and sciencey version of it all here for those of you so inclined.
So next time your parents give out to you for playing games, tell them that your working on developing your “striatum” ( a part of your brain which refines motor skills, helps you learn new procedures, develop useful strategies and adapt to a quickly changing environment ).
