There are numerous signs of recovery beginning to crop up all over the place and people are going into 2010 with their hopes high and have adopted a more positive outlook on the global economy. I, just as much as everyone else wants to see the back of this recession and move on in life.

Well any news is good news and it seems that in the entertainment industry things are finally starting to look up for them. Only two days ago I wrote an article on Avatar and Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 breaking the Billion Dollar sales mark. An impressive feat, and now reports on game console sales have been announced and a similar trend of recovery is found.

Hardware (units)

3.81m – Wii
3.31m – Nintendo DS
1.36m – PlayStation 3
1.31m – Xbox 360
655k – PSP
333k – PlayStation 2

Nintendo’s Wii saw it’s highest ever sales figures for the month of December with 3.81 million units sold, compare this to December of 2008 when it had sales of 2.15 million units. It’s almost doubled it’s sales compared to last years. The Nintendo DS also saw a slight increase on sales compared to last years, it sold 270,000 more units than it did last year ( 3.04 million )

Sony’s PS3 was also out setting some records of its own, smashing the million units sold barrier and racking up an impressive 1.36 million sales, putting it a good 50k ahead of its main rival, Microsofts Xbox 360. Sony’s PS2 is still racking up plenty of sales surprisingly, when the PS3 was first released, the PS2 was selling more units than it was but according to NPD, the PS3 has now outsold the PS2 by over 9 million units in the first 50 months in the market.

According to NPD Groups Retail Data, December was the industry’s “Best Ever” month for consoles sales, even better than December of 2008

“The video game industry experienced its biggest sales month ever, besting last December by 4%,

Understandably this one month record wasn’t enough to make up for the drop in sales for the previous 11 months and the industry was still 8 points down, or $19.7 billion compared to last year’s $21.4 billion, but at least it’s not as bad as we had all feared.

“The big sales [in December], particularly on the hardware front, [are] a positive move for the industry headed into what will hopefully be a recovery year in 2010.”

The only section of this industry that didn’t perform as well as hoped was Game Software sales which were down 7% from $2.8 to $2.2 billion compared to last year. However there is good news for software sales, there are several great titles expected to be released this year and now that there is a larger number of game consoles out there, it means there is more people to buy games so I’d expect this sector to see an increase this year.

So over all things aren’t looking to bad out there in the big bad world, lets hope things only get better!
