I’ve been asked several times by some of my readers, when they see some of my desktop screen shots, what the little Google symbol is that I have in my task bar and how it got there.
This is by far one of the handiest tools I have installed on my computer. I use it all the time, and it uses hardly any resources. What it does is allow you to search the web and your computer simultaneously. To start searching you can simply click the Google icon or a really quick shortcut that you get very used to – Ctrl + Spacebar and instantly the google search box pops up. It searches as you type, for example if I start typing in ” Google ” I’m displayed with a list of programs and files on my computer with Windows in their title, as well as possible Google searches for ” Google ” and recently visited sites containing the keyword ” Google ”
So how do I install this I hear you ask? Well it’s quite simple, I know there are lots of people out there who refuse to use Internet Explorer as their default browser, but I bet you all have it installed anyway. All you need to do is launch IE and download the Google toolbar from here
For some people this will add the quick launch button straight away, but I know sometimes you have to enable it yourself. You may also already have Google toolbar installed but this option is disabled.
To enable
- Click on the spanner for settings in the google toolbar

- Then in the search tab ensure that “enable quick search box outside browser” is selected and the “Show in taskbar” option

And there you have it, the Google Quick Search button in your taskbar. And what’s even better is it will use your default browser when you search the web with it, so for those of you who don’t want to touch IE, it will use Firefox or Chrome or whatever your default browser is, you just need IE to install it.
