Twitter To Start Charging To Read Tweets

Ok so if your living anywhere in the world, but Japan, this will not affect you. Unfortunately if your living in Japan you may now have to start paying to read tweets.

The amount charged will be around $1.5 to $11.5 and the payment modes will vary. Users can choose to use a credit card or they can choose to have it added to their mobile phone bills. They can also buy pre-paid vouchers from vendors. Twitter simply takes 30% off the payments.

This may be twitters first model for making money but I doubt you will get to many followers if people have to pay to read every tweet. Twitter in Japan seems to be the best place to try this out as most of their everyday lives revolve around using mobile phones and networks, they have the infrastructure to implement this. The user will be charged monthly and it won’t be a new system to Japanese “Twitterers” as they already have other exclusive services like a video sharing service, so this will be right up their alley.

I don’t think users will be too happy about this, especially if it’s rolled out further than Japan, the whole reason twitter is so successful is because you get information for free!
