Mininova Forced To Remove Illegal Torrents

Users of Mininova may have noticed today that it’s suddenly taken a crash course diet. Every single illegal torrent in its index has been removed, so basically nearly every single torrent. All that its users are left with now is content put up by the artists themselves and linux distros!

It seems the anti-piracy groups are starting to get their ways recently, with the closure of Pirate Bay and now Mininova feeling their wrath. It wasn’t just a change of heart by Mininova.org, in a recent ruling in the Dutch court, the Anti-piracy group BREIN have been pursuing Mininova for quite some time now for copyright infringement.

Mininova’s users have got off lucky this time, the court didn’t rule that they were responsible for copyright infringement but in the future the site will have to be better policed in regards to what members are posting. Mininova posted on their blog that they were trying out automatic content filters for a while but they weren’t up to scratch. So it was either face a €5 million fine or remove all the illegal torrents.

Unfortunately the court ruling leaves us no other option than to take our platform offline, except for the Content Distribution service. According to the verdict we have to prevent uploads of torrents to Mininova that refer to certain titles or to similar-looking titles.

But fear not! They have said that they are still looking to appeal the case

‘We are still considering an appeal at this moment

But for now it looks like Mininova users will have to look elsewhere for their torrents.
