We here so much about how bad smoking is for you and others around you, well now we have solid evidence. Mac users
who smoke may want to check if their Macbook is around next time they light up. It turns out, smoking is affecting your Macbooks health.
The Consumerist blog has been contacted by two different Apple owners who have apparently had their Applecare warranties voided and repairs refused because they were smokers. Apparently they were told by Apple that the computers had signs of smoke damage and could not be repaired because of the dangers of second hand smoke. They were then labelled as “bio-hazard” products.
They were also advised that having workers repair the computer would be an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association) violation since nicotine is on its list of hazardous substances. Letters were promptly sent directly to Steve Jobs, Apples CEO but were turned down. There is nothing in Applecare warranties that says that smoke damaged computers will not be worked on.
Apple has not officially responded to any inquiries about this policy and it is unclear if it is a blanket policy or if there is a workable threshold for the amount of smoke damage present. Never the less, this is the first time I’ve heard of somebody having a warranty turned down for “Smoke Damage”
