Intel Pays AMD $1.25 Billion

12 November 2009 View Comments

amd_intelToday Intel have agreed to pay Advanced Micro Devices a nice sum of $1.25 Billion over a long running anti-trust case. And lets not forget that only a couple of months ago, Intel were fined $1.45 Billion by the EU in yet another anti-trust case.  This final payment is to settle “all antitrust and IP disputes” with AMD for once and for all. This also gives both companies a cross license patent agreement for the next 5 years.

Intel have been constantly harassed by the EU and AMD over the past 2 years for unfair competition. Complaints from AMD were ( in layman terms ) that Intel was “forcing” computer manufacturers to use Intel chips instead of AMD’s. And this resulted in unfair competition. There were some other cases as well and AMD also had another case or two lined up in Japan. To find out more details about this case, Cnet did a good write up here

No doubt now that AMD’s bank account will be looking very smug at Intel’s expense, I’d imagine now that we will see them investing heavily in new products. AMD’s share holders certainly seem to agree and AMD shares jumped up 21% to $6.46 this morning.
