Apple has now got 100,000 apps available for download on the App Store. This makes the App Store the largest such retailer in the world. The App Store was really a revolution for Apple and lots of other companies are following suit to try and compete with it, however no one comes even close.

The App Store is available in 77 countries and to date has had more than 2 Billion downloads. These figures are quite impressive, especially when you consider the App Store was only released in July 2008 with a mere 500 apps.overview-hero-20090608

The App Store arrived when firmware 2.0 was released for the iPhone and iPod Touch and since then no other product is sold with an App Store as impressive as Apple’s. When Apple introduced the new iPod Touch in September, they promoted it as a gaming platform in order to compete with the likes of Nintendo and Sony. Apple pointed out the fact that games were very expensive for gaming devices but that they were much cheaper on the App Store. At the time, Apple had more than 21,000 game titles in the App Store, while Nintendo had 3,600 titles and Sony had 600.

It appears that Apple have made quite an impression in the mobile gaming market and at Apples recent press conference Ravis Boatman, vice president of Worldwide Studios at EA Mobile said

“The App Store has forever changed the mobile gaming industry and continues to improve,”

How right he is!

What do you think of the App Store? Do you think anyone else will ever come close to matching Apples? Let us know in the comments
