Barnes & Nobles much rumored Android based OS E-Reader has finally been officially released today and is called the Nook. The 7.7 x 4.9 e-reader is the first of it’s kind to run Googles Android OS. It sports a 6 Inch e-ink display with a color touch screen that allows you to navigate content and also turns into a virtual keyboard for searching.
The Nook also has built in 3G wireless like the Kindle and AT&T is the carrier. It has built in Wi-Fi connectivity and comes with 2 GB internal memory which is expandable via a SD Card to 16 GB. The Nook weighs 1 once more than the Kindle ( 11.2 to 10.2 ) and it cant match the Kindles battery life either ( 10 days – 14 days ) This is more than likely caused by the color touchscreen at the bottom. And whilst the Nook can play back MP3′s and has it’s own built in speaker, it doesn’t have the text to speech function like the Kindle.
One thing the Nook has over the Kindle is it has the ability to lend out E-Books you’ve purchased for free to other users for 14 days. Barnes and Noble say you will be able to lend E-Books to other Nooks, iPhones, iPod Touches and selected mobile phone handsets. It is available for pre-order today for $259 and is set to ship at the end of November.
